Setting goals is different for each of us. Depending on the persons background, ability, and current circumstances, they may have an approach that differs substantially from other people. However there are a standard set of pointers that people should keep in mind so that they are insured that the goals that they are attempting to hit are valid and achievable. If you do not pick the right goals then you are certain to face unnecessary failure and frustration. Use these tips to increase your chances of succeeding.
Being Specific
To be specific, you need to include the full details. Write down something like, "I have 1 million dollars by October of this year." or "I am the key supervisor of the sales division within 6 months from now." or "I have forged a growing friendship with my neighbor, Bill by this time next month." Include the names, the position, the amount, the date and everything else needed to train your mind to start working towards that goal. The more specific you are, then the clearer the target will be. If you have a clear target then it increases the likelihood that you will be able to hit it.
Being Measurable
Make your goal a measurable one. A measurable goal helps you in many ways. First off, you can break it down into parts which are easier to accomplish. Next you can use each phase as a measuring stick to determine if you are progressing, regressing or staying the same. When your goal is measurable it helps you to stay on track. It makes hitting your objectives easier and clearer.
Make it Time Bound
Set deadlines to achieve your goals or else you will never be able to finish anything. Stay specific when setting time-lines and schedules. For example, indicate things like "To spend an hour with my wife everyday starting tomorrow (indicate the exact date and year)". Setting the exact time and date will spur you on towards starting to work on your goals, instead of putting it off to some other time. Some goals can take years to accomplish so it is wiser to break these down into smaller objectives. You still want them to be complete with deadlines. You can finish everything in a nice sequence. Doing each objective in an orderly fashion until you finally reach the biggest one.
