There are some aspects of leadership that can be learned. Others are innate and can't be learned. Some people have a natural talent for leading others. These people seem to be born with the ability to lead. Other people seem to listen and follow them naturally. Most people can learn the skills of a good leader, but may not have this natural talent for leading.
Those born to lead have certain traits. These traits can be seen in children. Although they have not yet learned leadership skills, they will stand out as leaders of their group. It is a natural characteristic they seem to have. You may notice that you possess some of these characteristics. If so, you are perhaps a born leader.
Leaders are able to gain support and respect of others. People listen and are willing to follow them. They appear to be drawn to that leader. Most people will respect good managers, but they don't feel drawn or motivated to follow their lead. Some managers may have this natural leadership ability. This is a trait they possess, while others do not.
One of the reasons why leaders can inspire others is because of their genuine passion for what they do. They are optimistic and enthusiastic about their work or projects. They are committed to giving all they've got at all times. This kind of energy and productiveness is contagious. Simply being around someone like that is enough to inspire passion in others.
Even when things may not go smoothly, a leader doesn't give up. She remains persistent and focused. She keeps her eyes on the goal and shows determination to see it through. Similarly, a leader helps others stay on track until the project is successfully completed. She is not distracted by unimportant details, but keeps focused on those steps necessary to achieve the goals.
Natural leaders willingly take on responsibility. He doesn't view added responsibility as a burden, but welcomes it as opportunity. Some people don't want to occasionally take work or responsibility home with them at the end of the day. They prefer leaving their work at the office after office hours. Leaders don't embrace that mindset. Instead, they like the feeling of preparation, achievement and success that comes with responsibility.
An effective leader has a clear sense of values. She has definite standards of behavior and always lives by these standards. This affects the leader's reputation in a positive way. People will respect her more for living by her values. In addition, she has the courage to follow these convictions. She will stand up and fight when these values are challenged. This makes others want to follow the leader's example.
A leader shows great self confidence. This confidence allows him to make decisions and lead people effectively. He believes he can succeed and reach the goals he has set. This inspires confidence in others. It is contagious. Some people are born with natural confidence. If not, self confidence can be learned and improved. All these traits can be used to move you toward becoming a good leader.
