Having an employee policy manual is as necessary as any other part of your business. Without it you will sooner or later be challenged by a disgruntled employee and run the risk of losing everything you have worked so hard for. It will only take once and you will regret not having one. Every unemployment hearing I have ever been to I have been asked if the employee was aware of our policy, no matter what the policy was. Fortunately I have always had our employee policy manual with me. I knew they would be asking, and once I provided the policy the hearing was pretty much over. One employee who left in their first year thought they were entitled to the vacation they had earned, but our policy stated they had to work the entire year otherwise all leave was lost. The problem was solved without any further questions after we showed them the policy that they had signed for. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) generally makes most organizations tremble when they receive an inquiry from them regarding an employee complaint. I in fact received one very early in my Human Resources Career and I too was nervous. The employee was in a protected class and was charging our company with terminating her because of it. Once I was able to show the EEOC that she violated our stated policy within our employee policy manual the claim was dropped. You can make your life much easier having an employee policy manual for your staff so that they know what the policies on smoking, attendance, leave, benefits, sexual harassment, and many other topics are. This works even more effectively for your new employees. Everyone will know what their expectations are in all areas. It's amazing the trouble you will avoid by having one.
