Ebola outruns the response in DR Congo
The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak became the largest ever documented in DR Congo. WHO data reported through 18 August counted more than 5,000 confirmed cases and over 2,300 deaths, while the available licensed vaccine does not specifically target this virus variant.

Kyiv barrage exposes a widening air-defence gap
Ukrainian officials said at least 16 people were killed in Kyiv and the surrounding region during a large Russian missile and drone attack. The barrage included cruise missiles and jet-powered drones, further increasing the burden on already scarce interceptors.

Flores earthquake turns remoteness into response risk
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off Flores in eastern Indonesia, killing at least 47 people and damaging buildings, roads and communications. Landslides and island geography complicated access to affected communities.

Deadly strikes put Lebanon's truce under its hardest test
Lebanese authorities said Israeli airstrikes on Ansar and Deir al-Zahrani killed at least 11 people, including children. Israel said the strikes followed a Hezbollah drone attack that seriously wounded three soldiers; the episode was the deadliest since the June truce began.

Fed minutes reveal a narrower path between inflation and fragility
Minutes from the Federal Reserve's July meeting showed a 9—3 vote to hold rates at 3.5—3.75%, with three members preferring an increase. Staff called financial-system vulnerabilities notable and highlighted elevated equity valuations alongside persistent inflation.

The common thread is diminishing response capacity. Contact tracing is behind the virus; air defences are stretched by evolving weapons; a ceasefire lacks trusted enforcement; island geography slows disaster response; and monetary policy has little room between elevated inflation and expensive assets. Weekly pressure rose because each system is being asked to absorb more precisely when its spare capacity is shrinking.
